[System]

- Intel i7 4790k

- ASUS Maximus Extreme

- Asus ROG Strix GTX 1080 A8G

- Corsair AX760 PSU

- Corsair Vengence Pro DDR3 1866 (2X8GB)

- Corsair Hydro H105

[Issue]

While gaming the system abruptly died as though there were a momentary power outage. The power indicator lights on the motherboard and GPU remained lit (as they normally are when the machine is powered off), but unable to POST. When powering on the system the light on the liquid cooler pump (connected to the CPU fan header) faintly flickers and nothing more happens. There is no beep and no post codes are displayed on the motherboard. None of the fans spin either, not even the PSU (which is running in normal, not hybrid mode).

[Troubleshooting]

1) Attempted to unplug/replug each cable/peripheral (no effect)

- Tried shorting the power pins manually and using the power button located on the motherboard (same effect).

2) Disassembles the entire machine and ran the paperclip test on the PSU (fan spun)

3) Reassembled in a barebones configuration (Motherboard, CPU, PSU, 1 stick of RAM), same result as initially.

I recently installed the GTX 1080 and this was my first time doing any real gaming on it. I also recently applied new Arctic Silver 5 on the CPU.

My only conclusion is that either the CPU or motherboard is dead. Is there any way I can check which it is without swapping parts? (I have none currently available).

My guess is the PSU might be faulty. The fan running doesn't indicate a whole lot. Any PCs in the house you could try the PSU in?

I don't want to scare you but a similar thing is happening to me on an ASUS board and I recently got a replacement for my mobo and PSU. I tried it out and it's looking like the mobo took the cpu down with it. I don't think there is a way to confirm for sure without replacement parts.

Unfortunately not. I'm half tempted to go pickup a cheap motherboard and power supply just to have around as spare parts.

I can choke down a new motherboard and CPU combo if I absolutely have to, but I pray to god it didn't take the 1080 out too...
