It depends on your monitor, and games you play. If you only play lighter titles like rocket league, then the 270x is fine. If you have a 2k monitor or better, or you play a lot of demanding games, and the 270x isn't cutting it, then I would recommend the gtx 980.

I would recommend a gtx 980 for those games, especially gta v. If you can't find a 980 for under $300, I would recommend the newly released gtx 1060. It is slightly below the speed of the 980, but it is more power efficient, it's newer, and starts at $250. The only problem with that card currently, is that it's hard to find one because of it's recent release.

If you plan to play on 1080p@144hz, remember: Higher resolution = higher GPU load, higher refresh rate = higher CPU load, so you may want to change your CPU too to play at 144hz with a 980.

CPU: R7 5700X3DMotherboard: ASRock B550M-ITX A/C | Cooling: Deepcool AG400 Digital w/ Corsair ML120 Elite + 1 ML120 Elite exhaust + 2 ML140 Elite intake

RAM: 2x16GB Netac DDR4 3200MT/s | GPU: Gainward RTX 3080 Phoenix (+212MHz / +1000MHz / -6% PL)

Storage: 2TB XPG S70 Blade, Seagate Barracuda 2TB, Samsung 850 Evo 250GB (caching the HD) PSU: MSI MAG A750GL

Yeah, that's exactly why you saw such a big performance increase, high refresh rate is really CPU-intensive. What CPU do you have now? Because it may bottleneck the 980 at 144hz.

It is the Intel i5-4690 3.50 GHz

I would be afraid of bottlenecking with this CPU, I recommend you to search a bit on that. The jump from a R9 270x to a 980 is pretty big, so your CPU will have much more work.

The 4690 won't bottleneck the 980 too much. People have new found love for the word bottleneck these days.

Get the 980 if you can get it for a good price. I have seen 970s on the market for $160 around me so that might be a decent option too
