Macbook Pro cursor stuck on loading

I have a friend that left their macbook pro with me where after updating, the cursor is stuck on the colorful loading wheel and you cant click on anything. It is pretty much unusable, but I am not very experienced with OS X and would like some help on what to do and how i would go about fixing it.

Restart the computer

Could be anything. Software, dying hard drive, bad RAM. Turn it off by holding the power button, then try to boot it with shift pressed for safe mode boot, see it that does anything.

Turn it on and hold alt while the boot chime sounds, until you see a screen with the bootable disks. If there is only the recovery partition, the main partition is damaged and most likely the drive is dead or dying. You can try using disk util to repair it but it probably will just give you a wall of red text and fail to do so if the hard drive is broken.

If only Recovery pops up, then yes boot from that. Once booted, open disk utility, see if the partition is visible at all.

@Xineas So i did that, what do i click? There is a Toshiba drive, under that is Macintosh hd, then there is disk1 and then os x base system. What do I do from there?

I suppose Macintosh HD is greyed out, which would make sense as you can't boot from it. You can try to use the disk utility to do 'repair disk' and 'repair disk permissions'. This will most likely just give a list of red text and some errors though.

Macintosh HD isn't greyed out and I am able to repair and verify the disk, just the permissions are greyed out

That is possible, the permissions button is greyed out if the OS is a newer version than the recovery OS version. (10.9.1)

Gotta love disk util's ignorance. Do you have an external disk that's the same capacity or higher capacity than the internal disk which you don't mind wiping, so you can try pulling some data off of the drive?

Sadly no, is there any other way that I could go about doing this? If not, I may just buy one for my new system, but would prefer to get it done today.

Well of course you can try reinstalling OS X with the recovery partition, but since the system on Macintosh HD fudged up during an update, I'd rather not fudge it up even more and pull a copy of the disk before trying anything just in case. I'm presuming he tried updating to a newer version of OS X?

 

There is also the Terminal, it's on the recovery HD as well, under the Utilities menu item. You can use this command line to manually copy selected folders to a small usb stick, but that does mean you need some basic command line knowledge.

Another option is to do an Internet Recovery, but you can only do that on machines model year 2011 and newer. Then it installs the latest OS version directly from the mothership and as long as the drive isn't defective, that will not harm the data, as it only overwrites system files during the installation. Just don't format the drive before installing the OS.

 

To do this, plug in ethernet if available. Turn it on holding alt and if you don't have ethernet, choose a wireless network when the boot drive screen pops up. Once it has internet connection, the Internet Recovery option becomes available and a globe will start spinning. It may take some time.

No problem, as long as the drive is not defective and you don't format Macintosh HD with diskutil, you can reinstall the OS without any problems. I work with and repair Macs everyday at work, don't worry about it. If you need anything, just shout.

How long do you think it would take on a ~15mpbs connection. If it takes too long I could go home to my ~100mbps connection. @Xineas

Hard to say, it's not too bad. I believe the actual download is like 800MB or something. The installation in total takes an easy 2 hours.

Hold alt, like last time, to get the boot drive screen. If you have a 2011 model or newer, it'll show up.

OK, I logged in and then it took me to os x utilities again. Do I click reinstall os x? And if I do will it erase my data?

You can reinstall OS X, if won't wipe your drive, it will only reinstall system files and Apples own standard programs.

ok, so now the hard drive and the recovery are greyed out and it wants me to enable journaling or reformat my disk
