Hi All,

I'm new to this forum.

I had bad aches especially on my back and travelling a lot with my current Dell Precision M6800 and the weight is killing me.

My criteria of laptops is :-

  • Since I'm a heavy users for office works, virtualization & etc
  • Occasional gamers who sometimes play at high performance on and off (simulation games, FPS & etc games)
  • Need it to be light weight since I'm carrying out for presentation & working outside office
  • Good worldwide support & quality build
  • With expansion ports of Thunderbolt C for External GPU (as PC workstation when used at home)

Based on the above criteria, need some recommendations of laptop for the above and I'm about to decide fast to replace my current heavy mobo.

Thanks & Regards.

Dennis

Budget?

Just a fair warning - eGPU is not in full swing yet and is very gimmicky with docks only support 2-3 laptops (most of those laptops being either A - shit or B - bulky).

For a light gaming laptop, you have 2 main options

MSI GS60 Ghost Pro
Asus RoG GL502 Strix

Battery life is not great. 2-4 hours (depending on the laptop) but performance is solid, size is good and thermals are okay.

Do you know of any good gaming laptops that are 17in models?

This... it's not half bad. No thunderbolt, but eGPU sucks anyways. But if you have the budget for an external dock, then get the Razer Blade. Overpriced, but thin and compatible with the Razer Core

The Razer Blade is practically the worst option he has. It overheats, is LOUD (louder than other laptops by 15dB - that is HUGE) and has horrible support from Razer with RMAs taking weeks.

17.3' laptops are usually large and bulky. It's hard to find a slim 17-incher. I heard talks about a GL702 Strix but nothing concrete.

It's thin and light... of course it'll heat up (and thus be loud)

It's barely any thinner than the GS60 and GL502 but those run at 80*C and 45-48dB whereas the Blade runs at 95*C and 60dB. There is no excuse for shit engineering.

The MSI GE72's what I've got, not too bulky (TERRIBLE battery life, though). Definitely lighter than the Dell, by about two pounds. Basically if you can carry three medium-sized bananas around in your bag you're good. Not saying you should get this one, just saying it's possible

The only 17' gaming laptops with solid battery that I know of are Alienware cause of the insane size :D (both large laptop AND large battery)

Well, being a subsidiary of Dell, they have very good customer support most of the time and the cooling of the machines is excellent. They are by far the largest and heaviest but they offer respectable battery performance for a gaming machine and decent specs. Price is higher than some others though. Personally, I like the idea but not the flashy lights everywhere :D

Be sure to check out the others I listed. Each one has it's own pros and cons. For instance, the Y900 is the only laptop in that price range with an actual Mech keyboard whereas the Clevo models usually offer upgradeable GPUs. Read a lot of reviews.

lol guys, there's too many posts and it's making me blur

ok, talking about budget, I got no issues with budgets since I intend to use this as my laptop & desktop.

Which is why I also asked for thunderbolt ports for external GPU options.

As said, I did explore Razer before, but the support its horrible in Asia and definitely I can forget about it.

The rest like Dell, HP, Lenovo not able to fit my criteria of performance and mostly running on GTX960 which is bad for some graphics application and also not very suitable even for gaming on laptop.

Any better suggestions ? Need help.

970M can run most games at medium-high 1080p 60fps but if you want anything beyond that it will be large and bulky.
