Hey guys,

New to the forum. I'm building a new PC after 4 years. I'll be using it for Gaming, CAD and Video rendering and I want to make sure it's future proof as I won't be upgrading frequently like you enthusiasts :D. My current PC build in brief - i5 3570/ Gtx 670, 8gb Ram and I play on 1080p monitor. This time, however, I'm not sure if some of the parts are overkill/ not needed/ not worth. I will list the prices next to the parts as Australian prices are well GG^^.

List:

CPU: Intel i7 4790K or i7 6700K - $520 vs $490

Mobo: ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming – $250

GPU: GTX 1080 or wait for 1080 Ti?

-1080 is $1,200. Titan X in Australia would cost well over $2,000.

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3 2400Mhz 16GB (2X8GB) – $110

SSD: PCI-E or M2? Some recommendation would be great.

HDD: WD 4TB Black – $350

PSU: Corsair RM750x Gold 750W  – $180

Cooling: Noctua NH-D15s – $125

Case: Corsair Graphics 780T Black – $250

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit OEM – $200

Sound Card: Worth it or should I get an external DAC/AMP? I have heard some good reviews about Essence Xonar STX II

Monitor: I currently have a 24" 1080p 60Hz Monitor and I want to upgrade to a 1440P 144Hz or 4K. I'm not sure.

1. ASUS PG348Q 34" 4K – $1,800
2. ASUS PG279Q 27" 1440P 165Hz ROG Swift – $1,200

Cheers.

1. Go for the 1440p 165hz monitor (Unless you absolutely need a huge desktop are to work)

2. For an SSD, the Samsung 850 Pro series are good and would fit your price tier.

3. Definitely go for the 6700K (same price as the discontinued 4790K while being newer and better)

4. Go for the 1080. I have a feeling that the 1080ti isn't coming anytime soon (especially to Australia :/) and with Australia's economy a 1080ti wouldn't be remotely worth the money anyway.

build looks great, you can definitely use a 6700k for video editing. people will say to get an X99 chip and thats definitely an option but its all based on the render times you want. if you want to pay the price for 2 less minutes of rendering its up to you. trust me, I have a 6900k.

As much as you might not like it i'd seriously suggest windows 10. they're upgrading it for free just like OSX now. 7 won't be supported anymore really.

you can get away with a sata SSD, thats what I use, but PCI-e and M.2 are the same speed, its just form factor and price compared to sata. so its your choice. I get away with a sata drive perfectly fine. though scrubbing through footage would be nice on a slightly faster drive, its totally doable via sata.

no to the sound card, keep it external if you cant deal with onboard audio.

and i'd go with a 1080, unless your getting a 4k monitor to play games, then get the 1080ti. a 1080 can definitely do it fine though:)
