Display Won't Work Until Restart

When i turn on my pc i turn on my two monitors first then my pc when I used to use a hdmi switcher due to my xbox my display would load up with my pc even if my xbox was on on first boot. Ever since then ive sold my xbox bought a gtx 960 and use a hdmi port going into the tv and the included adapter of dvi to vga. The vga display works fine however the hdmi wont work first time if the tv isnt turned on first even though it is a direct line any ideas on how to fix this other than waiting for the tv to turn on. On windows display setting the display is there but cannot be fully connected. This will work fine on reboot. Cheers for any suggestions
