Switched on the PC started , loaded OS, all good and working. Restarted, display shows orange background with vertical lines (orange is my base colour in windows). And then I get a burning smell just for 2-3 seconds, so I unplug it from the mains. Since then there has been no post no beep codes. BUT if I remove the memory stick I get 3 long beeps a pause then continuous long beeps ( I counted as far as 8 beeps then decided they must be continuous, tell me if I'm wrong here). I've checked the PSU. I feel it's a memory issue but don't understand why there are no beep codes if the issue is regarding memory. I've heard the continuous long beeps indicate gpu problem, but my cpu has onboard graphics is it possible that only my onboard gpu is fried. Is it possible that it is giving out two distinct set of beep codes one after another. All the testing was done excluding any type of addons, drives, etc. What other reasons could cause this? Also, forgot to mention there is no apparent signs of burning on mobo or other parts. So what would the smell indicate?

would it be the battery that controls the time?

What are trying to say or apparently ask? I've described a problem and require any probable soluutions to it. As for the question you've asked. Your battery is generally responsible for keeping up the time that you've set once the PC is shutdown. So yes the battery keeps time.

@Samson_ST was attempting to suggest that the burning smell was from the CMOS battery. You did ask in your post "So what would the smell indicate?" He attempted to answer it. Don't be jumping down people's throats just because you have a problem.

As for your system. Chances are your board or CPU has been fried (just because there is no burning apparent on the motherboard does not mean it didn't happen). If you had a burning smell and your system no longer boots then its pretty obvious that something major is damaged.

If you can test your CPU and your motherboard with a different CPU/Motherboard.

Also, If you jump down any one else's throat simply because they are trying to HELP you (me included) you should reported or removed from the forum entirely. This is a place for constructive criticism and conversation. Not to p|$$ off those who try to help.

Good Luck!

The only thing we have to fear is... Stupidity...

  • 2 weeks later...

I am really sorry for what I said @Samson_ST & @VulcanAndroid. It's just that Samson just said the battery that keeps time and I couldn't understand it properly, and I replied accordingly. I am very sorry for what I said. And I really appreciate you guys trying to help me.

As for the board I had to give it to a nearby shop and they said the chipset is damaged. So I have to buy a new one. Thankyou for the help. And sorry again for my earlier comment. And would appreciate any kind of suggestions and advice for my new rig as I would be upgrading now.

PS:- Even my router gave up on me so I couldn't update sooner.
