iTunes backup problem

A friend of mine wants to restore a backup with iTunes, but iTunes is asking for a password when he goes to restore his file. He doesn't remember setting any such password. Is there any way to recover the password at all?

Probably he encrypted the backups and it wants a password to unlock them. Option's right in the device's window in iTunes.

Otherwise it might want the Apple ID previously associated with it in case he hadn't disabled Find my iPhone before restoring.

care to elaborate a bit more?
