So unless you've been living under a rock, in which case how your on this forum I have no idea, we have all heard of the new AMD line up of cards. But in reality we're still unsure on the performance of the cards. (unless there are new benchmarks that I have not seen) 

 

Now with this new line up of card for the red team people are saying that Nvidea will lower the prices on their current series of cards to stay competitive while we wait for the 800 series. And you can look in almost ANY topic in the first 3 pages of this section and someone will have said "wait for the new AMD line, nvidea will drop their prices", "wait for the new AMD line, they could out preform the 700 series for a better price" so on and so forth.

 

But do we really know if Nvidea will drop their prices? Will they just put them on sale to compete? And really series after series that come out it seems like even some of the older cards can keep up with the new hardware so will the volcanic island series really be the next big thing or just another small jump on the charts?

 

I mean for this to become a discussion thread about whats next for GPUs, so please let's keep it civil eh?

you don't know how fast the new amd cards are...or how they are priced. They could be more expensive and faster...than nvidia wouldn't drop prices at all.

 

I don't think there will be a big price drop. The new AMD cards are still 28nm, so i don't expect more than Titan when it comes to performance.

Well, it's common sense that Nvidia would lower their prices...

But how much? and how soon after the launch of the new amd line? Will they wait for the benchmarks from the new line to see if their cards keep up in the price/performance ratio? I'm not convinced they will drop their prices by much 50bucks max if the 700 series can't keep up

i dont think this generation is gonna bring so much performance increase, as far as we know the R9 290X is the only true new chip which competes against the GK110 GPU from Nvidia. The rest of the cards are re badged/tweaked GCN models further down the line from the top end 7970 of last gen. basically its the price readjustment and gen leap that Nvidia did with 700 series, simple and nothing more. Especially because its still the same process node, AMD just took a few extra months to refresh when Nvidia did it sooner.

 

Yes, nvidia will most likely bring out a few new 700 series models to compete, but nothing high end, most likely mid range/budget models. I honestly dont think the 780/770 price will budge, as Nvidia rarely does price cuts. This new 290X chip will probably battle alot with the GTX 780 in benchmarks, and its going to take imo 10-20% performance difference between R9 and 780 for Nvidia to adjust the prices. Im just not hopeful that Nvidia will slash.

This was my thinking, I really don't think Nvidea will have price cuts unless amd can knock our socks off, so I really don't see a point in holding off on buying a current gpu

yup pretty much, it will take an astonishing lead in performance of the R9 290X for price cuts, and through early benches we arent seeing that kind of lead, yes i know there are no 'offficial' reviews or benchmarks yet, but we can already tell by specs that the R9 card is not the TITAN KILLER everyone expected...

Has Nvidea made any more noise on the 790? instead of price cuts do you think that they want that to compete directly with the R9?
