Hi. So, I have this old desktop sitting around (Compaq Presario SR1403WM) that I was going to slap an ssd into. But, the product is no longer supported by HP. When I boot it up with a hdd that has ubuntu server, it does just fine and runs everything just as any computer would. However, when I boot with the ssd containing windows, its does not boot at all. I was thinking that maybe if a bios update could be burned to a flash drive and then made into a self executing file, then maybe it would update correctly and allow me to install some version of windows. Thanks!

Did you install Windows on that SSD with the Compaq machine or with a different machine?

I dont think your pc supports booting from usb at all.

First make sure your SSD appears in BIOS, also make sure to check boot priority.
Second, you have to do a fresh install of windows. It will not work if you installed it on a different machine due to drivers and stuff. BTW I would not install anything beyond windows XP since your pc only supports 2 gb of ram.
If all fails, make a boot disk with a CD or dvd.
