Hi,

A few days ago, I took my girlfriend's laptot at home to backup her data and do a fresh install of W10 because the computer is always stuck on the loading screen after typing her password.

First, I tried to copy the data from the laptop's HDD to my external HDD using Windows repair tools, but the recovery tool never detected the internal HDD even after unplugging and replugging it a few times from the computer, So I decided to connect it directly to my computer using an external enclosure. Never showed up on Windows, Just to be sure the HDD was not dead, I ran a Kali Live session directly on her computer with the HDD in it and even there I couldn't see it, Wanted to try a last time with the windows repair tools, but SURPRISE when i started the computer back, the screen wouldn't turn on, not even the backlighting... This model is equipped with an LCD that don't have any invertor to power it. So now I have disconnected the LCD ribbon cable from the MoBo, plugged in an external monitor in the VGA Out ( the only video output on this computer ) I want to install a linux distro on that computer to not throw it away and instead use it as a seedbox and NAS server. This is why i want to access to it from an external display for a few hours, just the time to set it up and and set up an auto starting VNC server in case I need to access it later.

so, having disconnected the ribbon cable and connected an external monitor, I expected that when I turned it on, it will automatically detect and switch the viddeo signal to the external monitor, but it isn't the case... Can someone here help me ? The laptop model is HP Compaq Presario CQ57, 6 years old computer but powerful enough to do what I want it to do. And my external monitor is one I had lying around, An Acer AL511 1024x768 VGA Monitor

excuse me for my poor english, I'm belgian, and had a very few english courses
