I need a cheap NAS

Used hardware baby (not old enough to use modern cpu's tough. and you need atleast 8gb of ram for freeNas if i remember correctly

What capabilities/performance/expansion/access are you looking for in a NAS?

 

You can pick up 2-bay NAS units for under $200 but they'll lack in areas that more expensive units do not.

 

Building a computer to serve as a NAS is also fine but again, cost greatly depends on your requirements.

I want to have some storage for the family all through out the house

File storage?  Do you want it to support media streaming?  Budget?  How savvy are you with storage software (freenas)?

I'll be putting in 2tb then looking to expand

For performance and expansion-- QNAP TS-831X-16G-US

 

For learning something new-- FREENAS-- Avoton itx (quad or octa) + 16GB ECC + a case that suits your needs.
