Hi.

I have an old pre-built system that I've had for YEARS and was wondering, is there any good 1156 CPUs around still?

The current CPU is a Intel i3 540 (http://ark.intel.com/products/46473/Intel-Core-i3-540-Processor-4M-Cache-3_06-GHz) and was wondering if it's possible to like, swap CPUs..?

I mean, it could be worth upgrading.. right? xD

Another thing is the HDD which needs upgrading but that's a different story, the storage is soo messed up on it.

So yeah, any 1156 CPUs still around nowadays?

Thanks

~Xiauj ^_^

i7 860 though those CPUs are quite expensive $70 used. as of storage just get an 1TB WD Blue $50 and for around $120 total you have breath life into an old PC

I would check PCpartpicker for either a CPU for 1156 or start a new system if you'd like.

Yeah I might do, was wondering if it's worth the upgrade that's all :)

Question for you both:

pretty simple and straight foward. just don't drop the CPU into the socket. also i found an i7 860 on ebay uk for 53 pounds

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-Core-i7-860-SLBJJ-2-8GHz-Quad-Core-Processor-/142046365960?hash=item21129f8908:g:mYEAAOSwXeJXfBns

as for is it worth it then you would get roughly FX 8320 performance out this CPU so for $70 not to bad of an upgrade.

Sounds pretty straight forward :P Do I need to change anything in the BIOS or on the OS?

no the OS wont care if you upgrade just the CPU. as of the BIOS just flash it to the latest one and that should add support for the CPU

If it's a pre-built, you may have to check compatibility but if you built it yourself it just gives a friendly warning.

Make sure to use a flash drive in the BIOS itself. Do NOT use it while in windows.

what is the brand and model of the prebuilt? you need to load the BIOS ROM into a USB stick and either use the built in BIOS tool if your motherboard has that or use an MSDOS bootable USB stick and put the BIOS file in the stick as well

though if you think about it most prebuild manufactures use the same motherboard for all thier CPUs, this way they dont have to design a bunch of mobos and can just use 1 that supports all, so if OP bought that PC back then and it had an entry level CPU aka the i3 that means back then the higher end model had the same motherboard but just a different more expensive CPU, like the i7 860. both of which are LGA 1156 CPUs

True but he should make sure before buying. I just fixed a guy's HP and I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't POST and it was because he put a Xeon in a machine whose BIOS only allowed i3's to be used.

well thats different because only some motherboard support them, generally for a consumer motherboard with a consumer i3 it should support an i7 CPU but its still wise to check and see if the mobo has the support for it. unless he is using an blade server motherboard or something like that is the only board that i can think of that doesnt support an i7 CPU
