Hello,

I am working on a long term project (Multi Year) in which I will need a Beowulf Cluster in order to handle processing power. I was wondering if anyone knew of any components that would be good in the cluster. I attempt what people say is impossible, In this case re designing a functional more modern version of the computer from serial experiments lain. It would be very helpful if anyone could give suggestions on the cluster or if you want on the build as a whole.

Whats your budget?

If you got money you buy new rack servers(like dell r630's or blades)

If you have a small budget get some used r710's or r610's

If you have no budget then use old desktops.

What are you computing?

This is going to be about a six year project. Running a completely custom operating system. It will be computing extreme visualization along with self improving code algorithms and both real world and randomly generated visuals. One of the few aims is to be able to calculate the first billion digits of pi in under a minute. I will look into those racks and such. If I were to custom build each rack do you have any component suggestions.

Custom Operation system? Is it going to be linux based or something home made(please don't). Id personally just use centos.

You can diy the nodes, but you have the problem that its going to take a long time and while builing a computer is fun, building 100 isn't.
