I am looking to get a sound card for my computer because there is static that comes through my speakers and I have around £40 to spend on one. Any ideas on which one I should get, thanks.

1st verify that the power plug where you have the PC connected is grounded

I had the same issue with white noise in my speakers - discovered wall plug wasn't grounded

I have the PC plugged into a power bar that is plugged into a power bar which is plugged into the wall.

You can pick up an older sound blaster X-FI rather cheap. PCI are cheaper and easier to come across than the PCIE ones, and either works. There is a guy who makes and updates a Windows 7, 8 and 10 driver package that works really well. 

 

I run my old X-Fi eXtreme gamer in tandem with my onboard audio so I can use my headphones at any time without needing to mess with plugs. Plus I like the way they sound.
