Storage Fluctuations

The other day a customer came into my place of work with a Fluctuation in his C: drive. The first thing that I did was run scans with Malwarebytes, McAfee, and Kaspersky. Nothing came up from any of those scans. We defragmented his C: drive and the issue persisted. The storage would fluctuate about 10 gb and the problem would still happen when the computer wasn't connected or even tasked with doing anything. I googled to see if I could find any solutions that would work. He has a ASUS ROG Laptop. It is running Windows 8.1. Also, his OS is on a M.2 and I did try to see what file was fluctuating and I couldn't find which was fluctuating to such a degree.  What am I missing???

Might be work checking.

 

Create a new account on the system with standard user rights and login after a fresh reboot.  See if the issue persists.

I agree with dark, it sounds like the paging file or maybe even hibernation file.

 

You could try running WinDirStat when the storage is most full, then again when the storage is lower 10GB, and compare what you find to be different.
