You need a TRRS extension cable, the one in the photo is TRS.

So I bought myself an external mic for my iPhone 5. Works great, only thing that annoys me is that the cable is too short. I've tried a standard extension but it doesn't seem to work.

Thanks.

Homie... thats a male/female AUX cable. The one in your car is usually a male/male. Male means it has "prong" or an "outie" (lack of better words... a pen*s)

The female end is a hole... you do the math. What you need is that think in your hands. plug the microphone into the female end and the male end of the extension into the camera.

Unless your mic is XLR, then you may need to buy a new one. but 70%+ of "filmmakers" in the indie world use AUX which I assume you are as well.
