Should I upgrade?

Tristanus

Hello everyone,

The summer sale is around and I bought some games like The Witcher 3 and DOOM. Quite hard to run ofcourse.

I currently own a MSI R9 280. (non X version).

I can still run the games I want but not that good anymore sadly. Especially since I own a 144Hz monitor, I would like to fully use it.

Is it worth to upgrade? A Nvidia 970 maybe?

My budget is around 300 euro.

Thanks in advance!

If you want the maximum amount of performance for $300 definitely wait for a new $300 card from either Nvidia or AMD.

@don_svetlio @ThatsNoMoon Yes I guess I should do that. Thanks!

Also, go for the 8GB model. Better longevity.

Like others said ... wait for RX 480 to hit the market.

But for 300€, I'm not sure if you can get GPU that will give you 144fps. At least not on high/ultra settings.

Yep - I'm not sure if even a 1080 can do 144fps on high-ultra in Witcher 3.

well for sure not if hair works are on lol

You might get that 144fps in some FPS games like DOOM for example. Maybe even overwatch. If not 144fps, at least close to that number.

@don_svetlio @simon771 It is better then my current R9 280 anyway.

Welp, my R9 280 got me 50-55fps at 1080p medium settings in Witcher 3 so I am happy :D

even intel HD 4600 can support 144Hz desktops :D

The difference between high and ultra is next to none. High is the best way to play it and maintain proper framerates. Even a 280 can handle 40fps high settings.

I have a 144Hz monitor. If I want to 'see', 'feel' the 144Hz I need 144 fps

Yeah I get that, but what's the point of having 144Hz monitor if you can get only 60fps.

I know that if I had 144Hz monitor, I would want my games to run at 144fps xD

Haha yes ofcourse. But it needs to be reachable. I bought mine for CS:GO, since I play at a high level I really needed it. But it is an 'extra' for other games.

well luckily you don't need crazy GPU power to get 144fps in CS:GO :)
