So I gave my first build to my brother around 9 months ago. I built it about a year ago and never had any problems with it. It ran perfect.

Here is the build:

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 270X 2GB Double Dissipation Video Card
Power Supply: EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

He and his family had been using it for the past 9 months or so, mainly just using it for watching movies and surfing the internet. No gaming or anything, never stressed the machine. A few weeks ago he told me that he couldn't get anything to display on his TV, so I went over to check it out. I opened it up and found that the inside was completely full of dust. There was so much dust I took it apart and cleaned everything before putting it back together. Still it would not post. I thought it might be the video card, and due to it being an am3+ mobo, I couldn't check the video through the mobo. Today I bought a new video card and tried that, but still nothing.

I have tried all of the trouble shooting tips found on these forums, but nothing helps. The mobo light is always green when powered up, and I never installed the mobo speaker and can't find it now. At this point I am starting to think that it is the mother board that is bad, but honestly I don't really know any more. I feel horrible that the computer is not working now and I'm starting to think maybe I did something wrong, even though I never had any problems with it myself. Maybe all the dust in case fried the motherboard? I don't know. Any and all help would be so greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

It's unlikely that the dust fried the motherboard. First start with ram. Try with only one sick of ram, and switch around what dimm slot it is in. Next, check the psu. If you have a multimeter or psu tester check and make sure that the correct amount of voltage is reaching the mobo. Are you getting any kind of beeps when you try to start the computer? If so, count how many and check against the manual. If all of that fails, you likely have a dead mobo or CPU. Have you ever removed the CPU from the socket? If you have, check with a magnifying class and make sure that none of the pins are bent.

Thanks guys, I have tried each stick of ram in all 4 dim slots, still the same results. I don't have a multi-meter so I can't check the voltage right now. But when I do power on, all the fans spin, including gpu and cpu. So I didn't think it was the psu, but I can't be sure about the voltage. And I don't have a speaker hooked up to the mother board right now, so I can't tell you about any beeps it might be making (totally my fault for not installing it, and then losing it).

Thanks for the replies, I really hope it is not the cpu :/. I was going to buy another motherboard next and see if that fixes the problem, do you think that is a good idea? Or is there something else I can do now?
