I see your point and that had crossed my mind.  However, I was thinking along the lines of getting away from the aircooled system i have moving towards watercooled and get onboard with the skylake series with some DDR4.  If I did opt to upgrade just the graphics card in my current system any recommendations?

What CPU did you choose? The 3570K (provided you overclock it above 4,5gHz) is still good enough for gaming and will not bottleneck higher-end cards.

What's your budget? What's your location?

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

You can still fit a water cooler to your current i5 if your case takes one. Also DDR4 doesn't really make any difference over DDR3.

For a 1080p 60Hz monitor then the upcoming RX 480 looks like a good buy. If you plan to go to 1440p then a GTX 1070 would be ideal.

Question is can my current build handle the overclock mentioned above or would I need to look at other motherboard options?  I really like the idea of a 4.00+Ghz build

It is impossible to say whether you will get 4GHz on the i5 3570K as every cpu is different. I would suggest buying a good water cooler (NZXT X61/Corsair H110i GT etc) and giving it a try first. You can always transfer the new cooler to a new build if you are not satisfied with performance.

Good call that + a vid card will definitely save me a boatload of money and keep the wife happy :) ... as for the 1070 I also see a 1080 series is the added cost worth it to go to the 1080?

If you don't plan to game at 4K then not really.

I'm in the US as for my budget honestly I'd like to stay around $1000 if possible but am flexible probably up to about $1500.  From what I've read the skylake blows ivy bridge as well as Haswell out of the water.

motherboard is completely overkill :/

The water cooled aspect leads me to another question.  How difficult is maintaining the water cooling?  I've always used air cooled systems but have always wanted to move to a water cooled solution.  Is there a special type of water you should use to prevent buildup/blockage or calcium?  Our water here in Florida quite frankly sucks.

Maintenance in watercooling is like maintaining a car. Keep doing water changes regularly, you are gonna be fine. Just a quick tip: Dont do a budget watercooling, if you are gonna do a watercooling loop, invest good money. I am in florida too, I gave up water cooing because the humidity inside the room from the AC outside also affects the radiators.

I need those 40 PCI-e express lanes.

If you are talking about the NZXT X61 then there is no maintenance required as they are sealed units.

A custom loop requires maintenance as you need to top up/change fluid every so often and clean it out, but they are a lot more expensive in the first place.

awesome... so i think the gameplan after all this is to figure out if the X61 will fit in my current case lol... if not then i'll need a backup plan.  But I'm digging the upgrade graphics card / move to watercooled solution and keep current system

It looks like it's very doable here is a video of a guy who did it.  I do know it has holes for watercooling on the inside which would indicate to me it's doable.  I suspect would mount the rad on the top of the system since it's a 2 fan solution.

Yet again... here is a video where they say there is no chance in hell

And... if I need to transplant the entire system what case would be recommended?

That 1st Video sounds like he said the cooler was an Antec 620. That is only a single 120mm radiator/fan so it would fit in the rear.

According to Thermaltake website the fan mounts in the roof are 120mm, so a 280mm such as the NZXT X61 wouldn't fit.

If you want a good replacement case then Phanteks Enthoo Pro/Luxe are very good, or if you want something more aggressive then check out the NZXT Noctis 450. Any of those will take the NZXT X61 or any other 280mm cooler.

Wow.... the Noctis 450 is a beautiful case!  It had me at hello.  I think I have an action plan now :)

Yeah it is a very nice case. You also get the benefit of a psu cover/shroud to hide all the ugly cables, and the internal hard drive/SSD bays are hidden so you get a much cleaner looking build. The LED lighting looks pretty cool as well.
