I'm wondering what I should do for college next year. I have some money to play with and IDK if it would be more worth it to buy a new macbook pro (that would be better than my current setup) or upgrade my current desktop and get a used laptop. I'm a CS major and I do a little bit of gaming so I was leaning towards getting a used laptop and beefing up my desktop.

Current:

i5 4670K overclocked w/ h100i

Gigabyte ga-z87x-d3h

GTX 760

8 gigs ram

Corsair HX650

couple SSDs for boot drives (Windows 7,10, and OSX)

1TB WD blue drive

I use a 27" 2560x1440 monitor and a 23" 1080p monitor.

Right now I have everything in a full size ATX tower, but I really want something smaller. I'm a huge fan of tiny cube cases, but I know its hard to find good ITX boards and you cant fit a ton of other stuff in them. Id be willing to do mATX towers if they're on the smaller side.

I plan on keeping my current monitor setup and my peripherals so you don't have to factor any of that in. I can keep the PSU, and all my drives and really just worry about CPU, GPU, Mobo, and Ram and a smaller case to put it all in. If I need to get an SFX power supply for a smaller case, then that's ok too.

I probably won't try to overclock a ton so if I can save money getting a non "K" CPU that would be fine. Id also then get rid of the h100i and get a smaller air cooler for a cube case.

I won't do a ton of gaming, and what I play is pretty light so don't tell me to get a Titan. I was thinking about just trying to find a used 780ti on CL and that would be fine. If you think there's a better solution speak up!

My budget is pretty flexible, but don't tell me to spend thousands of dollars on extreme editions and LGA2011 baords. I'm looking for a good value on something that will last me a couple more years.

If you have any recommendations on laptops, that would be welcome too. I'm a student so I prefer something lighter and more mobile that I can fit in a backpack and carry around campus. I have no preference macbook or not. Id install windows on the macbook and hackintosh osx on a windows laptop anyway because I like both for different software suites and uses. I won't be doing any gaming on my laptop.

Thanks, and feel free to ask questions if more info would be useful.

I understand your situation mate, in the same boat here,

Option 1:

Since you already have  a 4670K, I would just leave it and wont upgrade anything else, slap a GTX 1070 on it for around $400 and get a cheap dual core i7 laptop or something for HW and web surfing and etc for like $300-500 depending on your budget. This all can be done under a 1000$.

Option 2: Keep the same CPU, since its overclockable, you can squeeze more out of it,

get a new Mobo probably a mini-ITX, and a case like the FD cube and FE edition GTX 1070 for around 600$ with everything and get a $300-500 laptop depending on what you like. Again total cost around 1000-1200$.

Again both options cheaper than buying a brand new macbook pro.

I need those 40 PCI-e express lanes.
