Hi there,

I'm planning my first build, and I want to try my hand at a PowerMac G5 mod. I've been a Mac and console guy my entire life, but have decided to bite the bullet and join the PCMR. In my opinion the G5 tower is the pinnacle (at least externally) of case design, and I'd love to successfully pack a modern gaming PC into that classic apple design.

-  I'm based in Ireland, so I can order from NewEgg, even if the delivery costs are a little high.

- I want to build this system for 1080p gaming (BF, DayZ, The Witcher etc) and as development box, I'm going back to college and starting a CS undergrad in September, and I'd like this system to last for a significant portion of my 4 years in college.

- I can get my hands on the PowerMac case free of charge, and my budget for the remaining components is around €1000-1200.

My main questions are around motherboard choice, cooling, and power. My understanding is that I can purchase conversion kits that include a panel to mount a motherboard inside the G5 case, and that replace the rear of the case with a standard IO layout, but beyond that I have no idea what to look for in a motherboard, how many fans are necessary, or even how beefy a power supply I'll need.

I apologise if this reads like a Mac guy taking their first clueless steps into building a pc, but in all honesty that's me and any help at all would be hugely appreciated!

do you have tools to do the mod? i once wanted to do the mod but in the end i ultimately didn't because of all the labor required to mod the case so all the components fit in it though it will be a challanging project but i think if done correctly the end result would be worth it.

The tooling and physical modification of the case shouldn't be an issue, where I'm struggling is planning the actual components to use.
