I'm building my first computer for VR gaming (HTC Vive) and VR game development/3D modelling.

1) Budget and Location

~$1500-1600, US

2) Aim

VR gaming/development, 3D modelling, other casual low requirement games (overwatch, dota)

3) Monitors

Single 1080 monitor now. Dual 1080 in the future. (and HTC Vive)

4) Peripherals

Already have a logitech g700s, and cm storm quickfire stealth. (not buying any new peripherals or OS)

5) Why are you upgrading

My current docked laptop setup and ultrabook can't run VR games

I have been around computer building for a long time, and keep up with trends, but have never actually built one. Just wanted feedback on my parts list before I purchase everything:

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/9cpBm8

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($314.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212X 82.9 CFM CPU Cooler  ($39.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($150.88 @ OutletPC)
Memory: G.Skill NT Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($52.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($153.95 @ Amazon)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 1080 8GB STRIX Video Card  ($684.98 @ Newegg)
Case: Fractal Design Define R5 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($104.99 @ Amazon)
Case Fan: Fractal Design GP14-WT 68.4 CFM  140mm Fan  ($13.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $1606.75

I know it will be hard to get a gtx1080 since they sell out so fast (and the asus strix isn't being released on newegg until 6/13), but I was just planning on purchasing the rest and running on integrated graphics (without gaming) until I can get the gpu.

Let me know what you think. Thanks!

An evga 750W PSU would fit better with this build even if you plan on adding another card. the one you have picked out is a bit overkill.

I was thinking that too, but saw that the 850W is only $5 more right now. Is it worth the $5 for 100W more? Would the extra help with overclocking/watercooling in the future? Thanks.

If you must have gold then I guess it's a decent choice but you can also get one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1N83U90814&cm_re=Evga_750w-_-17-438-025-_-Product

Will it play VR? Yes

Can you develope VR with it? Sure, but you wont get a very good performance with 16gb RAM and I'd suggest an x99 board. Also you wont be able to overclock as much with that cooler vs a Corsair h100i.

For going with x99, do you mean also switching to something like a 5820k for the cpu for extra cores? Do you know if Unity/3D modelling programs would be able to take advantage of the extra cores? Thanks for the reply.

Priority (most to least):

1) I'd wait for the 1080 prices to decline and use the money you save on the card and buy 32gb of RAM for $100.

2) Save up for a better cooler h100i

3) x99 board is recommended but lowest in importance

1) What would you suggest for a gpu in the short term? 980 and 970 prices still haven't fallen enough to make them a good short term solution before the 1080s/1070s become more available. I was looking to build the computer in the next few weeks.

2) I wasn't planning on overclocking too much right now, but was going to upgrade to water cooling if I do in the future. The air cooler should be fine for stock use right?

Thanks

Most build guides I saw recommended at least gold. Do you think bronze is fine?

I bought the 970 as a fill in for $270 :) will get either a 1080 or 1080ti
