Should I sell 2 980s for a 1080?

Jacxel

So my current system has 2 MSI gtx 980 4g Gaming cards in it which has so far been pretty good for gaming on my 4k monitor and in VR. A friend of mine is about to build a new system and was asking me for advice, his budget is about 800(euros). I have been considering selling my cards and upgrading before they completely lose their value so I've told him i would discuss selling mine to him. I've offered to do him a deal if he agreed to buy both, he can't realistically afford that in one go so i have told him i'll allow him to buy one now and one in a month or two which allows him to increase his budget a bit.

I'd appreciate some 3rd party advice.

Firstly, is it worth me upgrading from the 2 980s to the 1080? I know they seem to perform similarly but given i game in 4k/vr I'm assuming the 8gb of memory would make a difference, plus it gives me a better upgrade path, a second 1080 in the future is no doubt better than going for a 3rd or 4th 980.

Secondly whats a reasonable price? I had listed the cards online for €350, which is more than i actually expected to get for them but i was in no rush to sell them so it suited me. I dont want to dick my friend over by overcharging him but i need to make up most of the price of the 1080 for this to be anyway sensible. Currently i can find 1080's from €659 but i would be inclined to go for one that's a colour that matches my system (red/black mostly) The MSI gaming x would be my first choice, i could pick one of those up for about €790. but i could also get the Zotac amp for about €700, thats black and rgb lit so it would look ok too.

Thoughts?

The greatest tragedy in mankind's entire history may be the hijacking of moustaches by hipsters.

It's not worth for you, you'd get similar performance, but with 8 gigs of vram.

It's either sell them now for a 1080, or in 1 year for half a snickers.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

I'd say yes if you can get around $600 for them -- they are going for $300~+ used on Amazon right now. (I'm not sure how they compare to prices in your region, but I'd guess they'll be somewhat similar) You'd get a bit better performance, albeit with a single card so less issues with games that don't recognize SLI / have poor performance using SLI. And in 4K/VR this would definitely benefit you.

If you can sell them for the cost of / damn near the cost of a 1080, why not?

Not really. SLI isnt perfect and it doesnt always work and the extra vram is very very useful.

Considering that in Unigine Valley SLI 970's beat a single 1080, I would definitely not sell your 980's to get a 1080. Maybe a 1080TI, but it's not like there's any good info on that to go off of.
