What's the main difference between WD Blue and Black? From what ive heard, Black offers more performance (saving recordings) and therefore costs more, while Blue is for saving games etc. And finally, what difference does the "Caviar" make?

Thanks a lot LTT Forum :)

Generally speaking, you would want a Black if you're gonna use it as a boot drive, as well as for gaming.

And Blue for saving non-frequent files like videos, image (basically storage).

However, the price difference isn't that much and most people would suggest to get the Black over the Blue because of performance concerns.

The Blue features this power-saving thingy that may or may not be reliable.

GENERALLY SPEAKING.

Black: 7200RPM + 64MB Cache(bigger is better), but may present more noise, heat, and power consumption. emphasis on the may

Blue: 5400-7200RPM + 16-32MB Cache (depends on capacity)

Regarding the "Caviar". It is just a model name designated for 3.5" internal HDDs. The 2.5" counterparts would be the Scorpio.

IMHO, I'd suggest the blacks over the blues.

However personally I'd be getting the Blues since they're usually more available at higher capacities than the blacks.

Also I'll only be using it as a storage drive (I already have an SSD as boot and programs drive, already have sacrificial 2.5"s for downloads and torrents)

Example: 6TB Blue = 4TB Black in price.

I will be getting a 128gb 850pro for booting device. I want it for my games and my recordings. Do you suggest getting a 2tb black?

So for gaming black only?

Yes definitely.

But before deciding, are you gonna be installing an SSD?

If not, an SSHD might even be a better idea but I don't have enough research to suggest a specific model

WD Black definitely. BTW, you'd want to utilize some portion of the SSD for your frequent-access games.

128gb 850 pro for booting device. In the future i will get a 256gb to put my top 3 games on it, as i dont want to crowd my booting drive, to keep everything fast regarding the OS. i might put just 1 game idk
