I'd like to play Elite: Dangerous but as I always do before buying a new game is take a look at the reviews, both from blogs and from random users. Every time I do this, the negative reviews make me change my mind.

I need you guys to talk me into buying the game, as I keep changing my mind. (or maybe tell me why I shouldn't buy E:D) heeelp me

The game is fun for the first hour or so, then after that becomes repetitive and boring as hell. The same fetch quests over and over again.

If you can get it cheap, go for it, otherwise my recommendation is No.

On another note, when the hell is Star Citizen going to come out damn it :(

I'd get it for 25€, normal price, so I guess it's a no

If my pc were good enough, I'd buy Star Citizen and just play randomly the alpha, but I tried it for a weekend (free weekend) and didn't enjoy it that much. Maybe future updates will make it better (I think, and hope, it will get released in 2018 or something like that, but it's just a random guess)

I'm a long time but not terribly active player. It is hard to say who will like it or not, because of the varied nature of the game, and also how you play it. You can play it as a simple grind to acquire more and more stuff, or put that to one side and just go do what you feel like. The latter may be helped by player organised events, and it you want to join in more more creative side activities.

I started in solo mode, so wouldn't be disturbed by other players, and it was a fun grind. A bit like the older days when things were less complicated. Bit of exploring. Bit of trading. Bit of combat. Building up my skills and bank balance along that way.

Then Distant Worlds Expedition happened. This is a player created activity of flying to the other side of the galaxy. A multi month long exploration expedition, and it wasn't expected for many to make it the whole way. This was a community experience, messing around with others online. Actually, I got out there fine, but the trip back is going to take at least as long... so I've not tried out the new content in the latest patch and probably wont for another couple months. I'm in the long game here and there is no escaping the jumping grind from this type of play.

You don't have to plan multi-month expeditions. I also did some Buckball racing, which are generally variants of fly from A to B via various intermediate points.

I think the best advice I've heard to avoid it turning into grind is to do what you like, not what you feel you have to do.

So... yes, a tough game to sell as it is what you make of it. If you want a quick blast, this isn't for you and it does benefit from putting time into it. If unsure, I think the best thing to do is just get the basic game. Don't worry about extras. If you don't like the basics, the extras are unlikely to help. If still unsure after that, do look for the occasional sale.

Oh, personally I think it deserves to be played with a stick, even a cheap one. I'm still using a Fly 5 with two buttons missing...

For what its worth, I tried Star Citizen also, but I don't think I gave it enough time to make a fair comparison.

I could just waste those 25€ for the base game (even if I'd really like to fly over planets and destroy my ship several times).

damn it's hard to choose ahahah Star Citizen seems more entertaining, but I don't know if there is really that much to do. It's also 60 bucks for the game + squadron 42, while E:D + Horizons is 50€.

yeah fuck it, I think I'll just buy E:D and find stuff to do and places to explore (one thing I always wanted to is visit the Sol System and Earth)

You will definitely get more than an  hour out of the game, I mean unless you are playing with a mate and purely grinding you'd still be in the sidewinder you start with most likely!

I've just got into it, relatively recently. I'd say I can see the problems that people will have in the end game ish of the game, and understand them, but the first 30 hours (and counting!) are so much fun. At this early point of playing, my only real criticism can be its awkward to know what to do. You can do all the tutorials and you know all the how, but you don't know any of the what really. You get out there in a space station with all this stuff and just kinda go "Uhhhhh but what do I do". Missions technically you can start with, but I mainly found there where "Go and get me some of this!" and I had no idea where to get it or how to find out (now I just use eddb.io). The "Take this to here" was alright and gave me some cash, before I was told to drop into a busy spot, either nav beacons or resource sites, and get the kills on wanted ships. Its been fun learning what ships and upgrades to buy from then, and once you have more modules and jump range etc what you can also do with the game, with missions, planets, trading, exploration, more combat, power play and what not.

There are end game issues that I see come up a lot. There is a lot to do, but not much reason to do it cept to grind for the next ship or part to make you better at something, to continue the grind for the next part along etc. But really, I think a bit of that comes from treating it as a " I need to get to an Anaconda! " which I've not done. I'm just enjoying exploring and flying! Especially in VR! Honestly, most issues come from the need to grind, but you seem to have a decent attitude of just experiencing the game so it should be a lot of fun.

SC is another game I've got, for a little longer too, and its also very fun in a different way to ED however. I think you've made the right decision to get ED tbh, no hate against SC. SC is amazing, but you don't buy it right now as a game to play, you buy it to support it and the development. Its still being made, yes there is stuff to do and I've probably got 30 hours plus in that too, but its also just still a baby of a game with little bits of the world coming together. Its going to be an amazing game, but now you are supporting the dev, rather than buying a game.

That said, there is frequent free fly weekends, where you can play for 3 days for free, so I'd definitely recommend jumping on then.

When you are making an account for it, be sure to use this when you sign up! Gives you free stuff and the person who's code it is gets it too, so helping out an LTT friend as well.

Already got my first Eagle! I think I'll focus on assassination missions and some random trading (I know, with only 2 cargo slots it won't help much), then someday I'll just float aimlessly and collect bounties.

I'd love to try VR with this game, but can't even wish to afford it ahaha do you use a HOTAS or just keyboard&mouse?

Its the best way to go really, just do what you want and have fun!

It is expensive, but I've been following VR for such a long time so its worth it.
And I play with Dual Sticks, so 1 hand is Pitch/Roll/Yaw and the other Is Forward + Back/ Left + Right/ Up + Down strafe. Gives me control of all 6 axis and was only £60, so not that expensive compared to a HOTAS setup. I'm using 2 T1600M which I got for £30 ish each.

If I was to go hotas I'd either go full CH products, so CH Fighterstick and CH Pro Throttle,

or a bit cheaper T1600m + new Thrustmaster throttle, but that isn't out quite yet.

I think I'll get the Thrustmaster T-Flight X something, it should be 50€ on amazon.. cheap enough for my pockets

oh and I got shot down in a no fire zone yesterday by an NPC (not a federal ship or one of those who guard outposts and space stations, I think it was one of those who try to intercept you while moving mission-critical cargo)

Yeah, that HOTAS I've seen used by a decent amount of people and for a starter one it does seem the best choice.

Getting interdicted can happen by pirates or other NPCs when you are performing a mission. Its just getting used to escaping for the most part, or if you think you can take it just do the fight.

Not sure if you know the easiest way to escape, but its usually just throttle to zero when you are being interdicted, which just submits you to it, this make your jump drive cooldown very short. Then just put all power to engine and shields and constantly boost away from them whilst waiting to either jump back to supercruise (fastest, but they could do it again) or jump to another system (awkward if you needed to do something in that system, but the NPCs don't usually follow).

Technically you can "fight" it and try and do the evade mechanic of sticking in the blue reticule long enough, but if you fail you are stuck with a very long cooldown to jump away, so its usually best to submit the moment you realise its not going your way.

this might come in handy, thanks! Usually I escape successfully following the vector, but I'll keep this in mind :D I don't know why, every time I try to fight pirates (even the really low level ones) I always end up dead. Looks like I won't be a fighter ahahah
