It can be done in software or through your motherboard.  First of all, you know that you will have to format (fully erase) any and all drives you are going to use for RAID, correct?  Plus, ideally, you would use 2 or more identical drives, and RAID-rated drives at that, like WD Reds.

Just because LTT talked about them for 3 minutes on a video, doesn't mean you understand RAID. 

You should do some serious research before setting up RAID. There are a lot of positives and negatives to different levels of RAID - but really you risk data with anything less than nested RAIDs. There are also specific hardware requirements for various types of RAID/Pools. 

 

Hardware RAID is also starting to become outdated, and you're better to look at software pools with resilient filesystems - like ZFS RAIDZ or Storage Spaces with ReFS. 

You'll want to do some reading on them to ensure you know just not how to set it up, but how to maintain it.
