I actually not sure where it's connected to since it's my parents house. Adter I connect it to my laptop straight from the wall socket, it shows unidentified network.

Or should I just connect it to my router/modem? Thanks!

The other end needs to be connected to the network for it to work. If you don't know where the other end is, then connect directly to your router.

Depends on your internet connection, the router (ports that it uses), WiFi strength, interference and so on. In general, wired is more stable than WiFi and can offer better speed. At the least, it's almost certain to offer faster LAN speeds than WiFi.

Basically it barely matters. If you have your network setting on automatic, you'll catch the IP from the DHCP that's at the other end. It's electrically safe and if it works, it works.

But you should note that if you do this without a router/firewall, anyone else using the same network can gain access to your computer. Like if you're sharing your stuff to the local network without a P/W and so on. If this is some sort of dorm type thing I'd have my firewalls at high alert if I were you.
