Limited connection

so i had 1mbps connection when i got the router(Arris WTM652B)(http://www.engadget.com/products/digeo/wtm652/specs/) and my ISP has increased it over the years to 20Mbps.

also have an access point(Netis WF2220) to give wifi to everyone else 

the last 2 months i have a problem when i use the connection full speed after a while my connection drops and becomes limited i belive its a problem with the router as its like 6-7 years old and got it from isp when i had 1mbps connection
