I'd take a look at Crunchbang Plus Plus. It's the spiritual successor to Crunchbang, a distribution that popularized the OpenBox window manager by giving you a very minimal setup on top of a Debian Stable base, it's pretty solid, only has a couple of small applications installed, is very lightweight. I would probably try it in a virtual machine to see if you like how it works.
