Hello everyone this is my first post so please excuse any mess ups.

I am building my first computer (finnaly), and I'm not sure what processor to go with. I was thinking about i5-6400 for a long time, however, the i3-6100 has become my new main choice because of the big price difference.  I am almost for sure going to get a z170 mobo as I plan on getting a 6600k/6700k in 2-3 yrs. My total budget for my rig is 500 and I plan on getting a gtx 950 for gpu. I would like to stick with intel but if anyone has an AMD option I'm open for those as well.

My main use would mainly be gaming easy games (csgo, dota) but I would also like to start playing things like Star Wars Battlefront, Fallout 4. I am not looking to max out those games however, just looking for decent fps.

Along with gaming I also plan to edit video.

Thank you very much

PK

At 1080p an i3 + GTX 950 would be great, you can expect 60 FPS on low - medium settings.

(Demonstration)

i7 4790k | MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition | G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB | MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V | Fractal Design R4 | EVGA 650W

A gaming PC for your budget: $800 - $1000 - $1500 - $1800 - $2600 - $9001

The 6100 will do fine, especially if you intend to swap it next year or so. Kaby Lake will also be around, so that's a plus.

Just give your GPU a bit more love. Aim for a 2nd hand 960 or r9 280(x) / 380(x). You might be able to find one of those for cheap, now that people will go crazy about upgrading to 1080s and 1070s.

Thanks. Do you guys think that the fx-8350 would be worth the ~$30 more for the price over the i3-6100?

Not at all. Poorer performance in many games, as well as 0 upgrade path.

If you have those extra 30 bucks, either save them for Kaby or invest into a better GPU.
