So we currently have a router+modem setup at my dads computer, with a 50ft ethernet running under the house to my room.

We also have a shit wifi extender thing setup but i hate that

would it be possible to set up a 2nd wireless connection in my room for better wireless on phone/ipad/anything else? because my current wireless in my room sucks ass

I've been told I need a repeater but this is all new to me but dont mind learning myself how to do it.

Hopefully someone has knowledge about this.
:)

You don't need a repeater specifically but what you'll end up doing is turning a wireless router into a repeater of sorts, which is what you want. You can pick up any solid wireless router and then just turn off DHCP and NAT. Make sure you plug the cable into one of the LAN ports and ideally make the SSID the same as the current one. Then you can hook your computer up to the router as well and be good to go on all fronts :)

I recommend the Asus RT-AC66U or something similar but you can go with anything you think will work, just make sure it has a few ports on the back.

buy a WiFi Access Point, connect it to the Cat5 in you room

on the AP, set the channel to something that doesn't overlap with the existing WiFi and you can also name it differently

if the WiFi devices you have can use 5Ghz bandwidth, even better

Thanks for the help guys.

I also forgot to mention. The Ethernet cable I have in my room is currently plugged into a 5 port ethernet switch, with ethernet cables plugged into my PC and PS4.

Would I have to get rid of this? or could I keep using it?

I mainly just want better wifi for my phone/tablets/and my xbox as well.

keep it

if you buy a router and not an AP, it might not be needed since routers have 4 port switches on them

You can either keep it or get rid of it if the wireless router you buy has enough non-WAN ports on the back. Most generally have 4 LAN ports so you'd have 1 for PC, 1 for PS4, 1 for cable to rest of the network, and 1 spare.

if its just for your mobile devices, get a cheap wireless access point and plug it in on the switch with the rest of the stuff.

this'll also be my place to add that i've had some really bad experiences with wifi in the bedroom, and therefor wont *recommend* putting wifi in your bedroom. but it seems to mostly be a thing that affects some more than others.

(i can actually control my dad's ability to sleep by wifi quite reliably...)

Scoot the Cable to one of the yellow ports and you're good.
