Hi Guys

I was thinking of building a digital picture frame like (Electric Objects - http://shop.electricobjects.com/).

I was fascinated by the idea of making something like in Harry Potter (using GIFs and VIdeo Files) with additional features like Calendar, Notifications, Time etc..

using a Linux system with a web service to manage all the functionality.

This is no commercial endeavor of any kind just a geek trying to do something cool :):)

I am thinking of getting a Korean Monitor (Crossover-COCO402UT) and Pairing it with a Raspberry Pi 3 and building a Wood Frame to hold both

My Main Issue is will Raspberry Pi 3 be able to run a 4K Monitor at a decent frame rate (Min 24 / Great if 30) with H.265

And if it can't is there any alternatives?

Thanks in Advance 9_9

Damm, that's one hell of a picture frame. Isn't 4k a bit overkill?

From a bit of research, the pi is able to do 4k, but only barely. You would be better off with a 1080p monitor, or with another single board computer.

  • 4 weeks later...

I got a bit banged up Crossover Monitor for less than $100 and it was not only as a picture frame but also connecting to some IOT things around the home and use it as a dashboad (http://freeboard.io/) and an information center

I tried it with a pie and  it was not working well when i tried some looping videos it chocked. Still looking for a good soluting but thinking of getting a 4k capable android box and adding it to this
