what is the highest number of possible cpus that can be put on a motherboard and communicate together. not what is for sale but what is the theoretical highest number. Since motherboards that i can find either support 1 or 2 cpu placements could it be possible to essentially "daisy chain" motherboards somehow to get this multi cpu communication using current technology. I ask because i want to design and build a desk that has a pc built into it that is running some stupid high seemingly impossible specs that actually functions to prove to a friend that I can build something this difficult.

So let me get this straight, you want to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars building a cluster just to prove a point?!?

Of course you can do it, theoretically there is no limit to the amount of cpu's in a cluster  but unless you are using said setup for very complex calculations than forget it.

It won't run Crysis :P

Eight is the highest intel goes up to with their e7 8xxx cpus, but eith something like these

http://ark.intel.com/m/products/84685/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E7-8890-v3-45M-Cache-2_50-GHz#@product/specifications

You can have 144 cores and 288 threads with eight of these. Be prepared to sell your soul, and any organs to pay for them though.
