Wake on LAN for Wireless?

Just wondering if Wake On LAN can work for wireless... so... I think it would be something like... Wake On Wireless? I don't think that would work though, but I'm just checking. I have a Linksys WMP600N WiFi card and an Asus P9D WS, not sure if that matters for this. And yes, my board has support for Wake On LAN.

While it's possible, it's highly dependent on the drivers and wireless card.

Can Wake On LAN be done for private networks? Meaning networks that are not connected to the internet?

Only if you're locally connected, otherwise no. So you could rig it so a server/computer that is connected to the internet can send the WoL packet.

Wake on LAN is designed to be used on LAN, regardless of whether they are connected to WAN or not.

Obviously you missed the point

You asked if Wake on LAN can be used on private networks, not connected to the internet (typically LAN networks, but could still be part of a WAN). I don't see how I missed the point there....

He's talking about a secondary network segment so you would either have to access via an intermediary computer or not have access at all.

Ah, I see. I was thinking of using it within the same network, rather than an external network that's not connected to the internet.

@IAmLamp I see what you mean now. It is possible to use wake on LAN on a network without internet access, but it requires it to be connected to a WAN, with at least one computer accessible from outside of that network. If it's on the other side of the country, it's unlikely you have that sort of infrastructure available, so it would be quite difficult to set up without connecting them to the internet.

EDIT: If the private network is physically close, you may be able to add it to an existing local network, either just as a normal extension of the LAN, or you could segment it off using vLANs to make sure only certain devices can communicate with the segmented section of the network.
