I upgraded the motherboard and bought an ssd to put windows 7 on. I can't seem to use the product key because it's an clean install and not a upgrade or repair or something. I do have the diskt and the product key. It was used before i upgraded the pc. What can i do? i don't want to purchase windows again.

What does it say if you try to activate windows with the Key you already have?

Search for any Windows 7 key online (preferably a volume licensing key) and try activating it with that key.

Or disable Windows activation :D

Simple.

Scroll down to "Method #2"

This was added in Windows 7 to allow people with upgrade license to clean install, as before it was a pain, where you had to install the original Windows, and upgrade to each version one after another if you have multiple Windows upgrades. Method #2 also works with Windows 8.

Thanks, I might have to try that. Do you think Method 3 would work tough? I do have the cd and the licence key, so i just select upgrade instead of coustom. Or does it have to be activatet previously for it to work?

The command prompt needs to be open with elevated credentials (true admin).

Open the Start Menu again and type cmd in Start Menu search to display a shortcut to the Command Line utility. Right-click this shortcut and choose "Run as administrator." Handle the UAC prompt.
