Hey, new to the website and to building PCs in general.I just had a friend help me build my very first PC and it was a pretty good learning experience(In case you're curious... We build this). Now, I have my old PC collecting dust, and when I opened it up to cannibalize some extra parts like the HDD and DVD drive, I though about upgrading it and giving it to another friend so we can play together! Also, I can use this to get some hands on experience actually "building" something myself.

Now, this is the computer I was the computer I want to upgrade(it was a hand me down from my dad who doesn't really know anything about computers and thought expensive = better). As for the parts I'm considering, this is the CPU I'm getting, and this is the power supply. As for GPU, I have a co worker that offered me one for cheap, but It was a really long time ago and I don't remember. I'm gonna ask him tomorrow, but feel free to give me recommendations. And, if possible, give me links to newegg so I can take advantage of my free Premier trial. Thank you in advance! <3

Edit: My budget is around 150 to 200 dollars, and my goal is to have it run modern games moderately well (have the run good at medium settings). Feel free to suggest better options for CPU or power supply.

Does that PC even use a BTX PSU? What´s your budget for the upgrades?

I really don't know... I haven't really thought this through... All I knew was that I needed more wattage for the graphics card. and my budget is sitting at 150 to 200$

Yup. It does. YOu'll have to excuse me... I don't know how most ports are called, I just tell them apart visually.

Well then your power supply should work with it as long as the power supply in the case has the same dimensions as your new one ;)

Thank you! What about the CPU, is refurbished a good idea? And I would really appreciate a graphics card suggestion. I'm surprised the thread decided to focus on the power supply xD

What would your price range be for the GPU? I think your CPU is a good choice, I have a very similar gaming rig from a couple of years back with a Pentium 7400 4gb ram and a HD6950.
6950's on the used market (in Australia) range from 40-80$ and perform as well as a GTX750 in most games.

That would be my suggestion

CPU? I´d recommend a Q6600 and oc it. Get a 212 plus, decent PSU, and as for the gpu? Used 7950.

OP already has a PSU in mind and a 6600 costs far more than the $10 the OP is spending on the current CPU. a 6950 for 30-40 has a much better price/performance than either the 7950 or the 750 TI. Overclocking is also above the OP's skill level. For the  prices he  is showing OP is getting the best deal with what the OP has in mind.

I think your thinking of the wrong 6600. The Core 2 Quad 6600 is the one I´m talking about. Those are easily found for $10-$20. As for the price to performance, if you say so.

Theres
some raw data for you. If you can get a Q 6600 for around the same price, go for it. be looking at craigslist and the like.
