Need help: wifi issues on android

Go to solution Solved by Nord,

Could be the Wlan encryption, dont remember exactly but certain encryptions dont go well with certains phones / android versions, so try fiddling there or - if you dont live in a urban area - just disable the encription entirely for testing purpouse.

Another option could be:

1. Go to your phone dialer
2. Dial *#0011#
3. When you see the "ServiceMode" screen, press the left menu button
4. Select "WiFi"
5. See that "Wifi Power Save Mode" button that is "ON" - well turn it "OFF"
6. Exit this menu, turn off your Wifi and turn it back on. If you already entered all your wifi credentials, forget your network info (remove it) and re-enter it again.

Or if you do have a sufficient cellplan and all else failes, you can enable an option in settings that will use your 3/4G if the wlan drops untill it comes back, so you can save some bandwith at least.

Only other solution I could think of would be a factory reset, just as krkevin said.

Those generaly work wonders and dont even take too long anymore. Just use w/e backupsoftware HTC provides and save your contacts and w/e other stuff you deem necessary.

Summary of problem: WiFi on my android phone does not work properly at home. When i connect, I usually have well performing WiFi for at least a minute. After that it seems to lose the internet connection, while it still shows to be connected in the status bar on top. No matter how long you wait (at least 5 minutes, at that point my patience ran out), it wont get to work again automatically. What solves the problem is disabling wifi, en then enabling it again so it reconnects. But the problem returns in a matter of minutes, with some bad luck even after 30 seconds. You can imagine watching a 30+ minute youtube video, like the WAN show, is no longer entertaining when it's necessary to switch WiFi on/off about 15+ times during that video.

Things that do work: Using WiFi on my phone works well at my grandmothers house, (or at least significantly better). WiFi on my laptop at home works well (also using 2,4ghz on laptop). Wired connection at home works well.

Hardware/software:

     - Networking:the wireless access device at home is an Asus RT-N66U router, connected to the ISP router. It's only meant to be a wireless access point and has no other function. It's configured with one 2,4ghz network and a 5ghz network. I am using the 2,4ghz because the 5ghz doesn't reach my room properly. Security on the 2,4ghz network is WPA2 PSK.

     - Device: an HTC One m7 with android 5.0.2. The IP settings on phone are configured as DHCP.

Tried so far:

- Already mentioned the turning off/on which works short term, but is not a proper solution

- I tried giving my phone a fixed IP address - made no difference

- switching off all WiFi devices in my room to minimalize interference - made no difference.

So you guys have any suggestions of what else I should try? Thanks in advance.

Thanks krkevin for thinking with me to find a solution. I have considered it, but the work involved on getting everything back on is going to be horrible in my case (it's probably going to take me a full day). I hoped to find another solution, but if there is no easy fix I could be able to try a factory reset in a few weeks.

Does anyone have another idea, which is less time consuming? ?

@Nord or quote me if you want me to reply back. I don't necessarily check back or subscribe to every topic.

Thanks Nord!

I'll definitely try those things you suggested. I'll reply again once I've tried both.
