I have used the inbuilt DLNA server feature of Windows 10 and set up media streaming on it a while back. I then used a file explorer to access it from another device on the same network.

This worked flawlessly until today.

Now the video is very choppy and and the connection is slow. I cannot imagine what may have caused this because I did no adjustments to anything, either my computer or my phone. There has been no windows update, or android update.

I have a linksys E1000 if that helps. The device im viewing the content on is a Nexus 5 .

Is it characteristic of a router to drop speeds at will?

Can anyone provide a solution to this problem? Maybe another way of streaming content? A different app? (I know about plex)

Please vote for Donald Trump. I am out of sitcoms to watch.

If a router is overheating, then it may probably drop speeds.

Give Universal media server a try, it's what we use here and it works nicely on everything, even our smart TV picks it up, not to mention consoles like PS3, PS4, etc...

I'm not sure how you would get it on your phone though, probably in a similar way to what you do currently.

An aging router will decrease in speed, but it could also be due to congestion/interference. Try changing the channel on which it operate on (don't leave the channel selection on Auto, that feature never works properly and often just drops your connection for a bit)

That's not really a strong signal there. I generally get between -30 to -40dBm signal strength here, 10 meters from the router and quite a few walls in between.

How far are you from that router?

Because at nearly -70 dBM...

Lets's just say it's not adequate.

Im 3 metres away from the router. The only problem is that there is a concrete wall separating it and me . Even if the signal cant pass through, there is not much of distance for the signal to cover anyway. 9-10 metres tops.

So its the router then. Right. I might  upgrade to the Linksys E3000.

Can you go beside the router and see what signal strength you get?

Also performing a speedtest to check down speeds isnt really indicative of the range/ speed I will actually be getting at my desk is it?

somewhat, but that only test your internet speed, not the speed between your computer and device.
