As I mentioned, the reason I asked what is the make and model of your R9-280 is because Gigabyte is known for disabling GPU voltage adjusting. This is either something in the vBIOS, or some kind of physical hardware limitation -- I am not 100% certain.

You can try other overclocking programs...before giving up...

  • Sapphire TriXX
  • ASUS GPU Tweak

If you want to test your might :P you can try flashing a different R9-280's (AKA HD 7950) vBIOS onto your card, and see if you can unlock voltage control.

** THERE ARE RISKS INVOLVED ** It is come-what like flashing the BIOS of a motherboard to another COMPLETELY different board (i.e. ASUS motherboard BIOS to a Gigabyte motherboard)

Hello, so I'm trying to overclock my r9 280. the GPU clock is at 1100 mhz. (on default it was 1075mhz) I am using Amd OverDrive to overclock it. But when I run my unigine valley benchmark. The GPU clock tops out 950mhz. How I can fix this?

Put the preset to EXTREME and see if the top clock changes

  • CPU: AMD athlon  860k
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte F2A58M-HD2
  • RAM:2x4gb HyperX Fury
  • GPU: XFX R9 380 4gb

I dont know why but it starts as 1100 then goes to 100% usage then goes to 950 and then instantly jumps to 1100 but with 64% usage. And then goes to 950 with 100% usage and it jumps couple more times but finishes as 950 with 100%. I dont understand this. :D

If you have the latest AMD Drivers turn off power efficiency

1 - don't use Overdrive
2 - Use Afterburner
3 - Valley sensors are crap
4 - R9 280s usually top out at 1150-1200.
5 - keep temps under 85*C
6 - set power targer in AB to +20%
7 - add +25mV
8 - test all day

I already did this. Thats why it went from constant 950 to jumping 1100 and 950.

1 and 2 - I started with it. And then i noticed this and jumped to Amd OverDrive.

3. I look at overdrive status.

4. Cool

5. Ok

6. Allright

7. Ok gonna try

8. Ok

It seems that i got 1155 stable. On 1160 (ok nvm as I'm writing this post i saw artifacts on 1155 :D going back to 1150) there were some artifacts. I did everything but now i have two questions. 1. Do I need touch memory clock.

2. i cant change core voltage. Its grayed out any ideas? But when I first launched afterburner i could change it.

Enable voltage adjustment via advanced options
1150 is good, add more voltage for higher clocks

I cant find that option. If you're talking about those: http://prntscr.com/azxo1t Its already enabled.

Valley crashed after ~10 mins in 1150 so i'm going now with 1145

no for now. memory bandwidth is plenty on the 280

So how i can change core voltage?

You may try other overclocking software....but it depends whether or not voltage adjustment is enabled for your specific R9-280 model.

For examples:

  • Sapphire TriXX
  • ASUS GPU Tweak

Back in the day when I had a few Radeon HD 5850's, one of them was a XFX one (I had three; the other two being Sapphire made).

MSi Afterburner did not have voltage tweaking available for the XFX card. Weird thing was, when I fired up Sapphire TriXX, I could adjust the voltage -- and it was verified in GPU-Z.

Some manufacturers (Gigabyte is a known one) disables the option to change the  GPU core voltage.

Speaking of that, which R9-280 do you have (manufacturer, and model)?

AMD Ryzen 9000 Rig

  • AMD R7 9800X3D + Alphacool CORE 1 w/ Performance Mount Kit + Thermal Grizzly AM5 Contact Frame
  • Gigabyte X870E Aorus Pro Ice
  • 32GB (16GB X2) G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB DDR5-6400
  • Sapphire NITRO+ 6800 XT Special Edition + EKwb Full Cover Block
  • Custom Loop w/ 2x 360mm Radiators
  • WD SN850X + WD SN750 + Samsung 980
  • EVGA P2 850W + Red/White CableMod Cables
  • Lian-Li O11 Dynamic EVO XL

AMD Ryzen 5000 Rig

  • AMD R7-5800X
  • Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro AC
  • 32GB (16GB X 2) Crucial Ballistix RGB DDR4-3600
  • Gigabyte Vision RTX 3060 Ti OC
  • EKwb D-RGB 360mm AIO
  • Intel 660p NVMe 1TB + Crucial MX500 1TB + WD Black 1TB HDD
  • EVGA P2 850W + White CableMod cables
  • Lian-Li LanCool II Mesh - White

Intel i7-8086K / Z390 Rig (Decommissioned Q2' 2025)

Intel i7-6800K / X99 Rig (Officially Decommissioned, Dead CPU returned to Intel)
Intel i5-4690K / Z97 Rig (Decommissioned)

AMD FX-8350 / 990FX Rig (Decommissioned)

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T / 890FX Rig (Decommissioned)

Mine is Gigabyte with Windforce cooler. I think i'll download gigabyte oc guru then. :)

Ech what ever. Still i got +75 mhz increase in my gpu core clock. And it seems to be stable. For now I have enough performance to max (almost) everything I play on 1080p so I'll mark this post solved. I'm happy because i got ~5 fps boost in performance on valley benchmark :D. Ofc i'll try these programs. Thanks for helping!
