Whats the best home server operating system out there? I was thinking about using either Amahi or Nas4Free, originally I wanted to use FreeNas, and yet openmediavault is also a possibility. What it would be used for is going to be listed below, I'm just looking for some input, and as far as that goes I will list what I am looking for as far as a home server goes.

  1. Cost of setup
  2. Backup of all things electronic in my house
  3. Central storage & transcoding for plex.
  4. Central storage for iTunes Server as well.
  5. Redundancy, which can be solved with RAID 6 if need be, I would like this to at least stand a couple drive falls.
  6. Easy to Use, like for plex and backups
  7. Able to access outside and use it like a cloud system.
  8. Support for antivirus.
  9. Support for VPN.
  10. CPU with a decent Passmark (8k or above).

Thanks.

If you've previously won the build off please pm me so we can get something worked out.

For a home server CPU the Xeon E5 2670 would he great. It is about 70ish on Ebay and has 8 cores with 16 threads. It also has a passmark of 12511.

My Work in Progress PC http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/522048-xeon-build/ <-- That PC was built but never booted:(

My Work in Progress PC 2.0 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/540583-xeon-build-20-code-name-xenox (Hopefully this one boots.)

Well I actually found it new for like $350 dollars...as I said before I don't like my products used...do you have a decent motherboard to go with it? Something that has like 9 Sata ports?

I would not worry about buying a 26xx Xeon used because they come from servers and are not super stressed ever in their life. Also Xeons are made to never fail. On top of that most of the E5 2670s are actually from old Amazon servers that got upgraded. I have a used one in my system right now in fact. As for motherboards I have seen some that have 8 but due to the age of this chip most of the boards have a mix of SATA 2 and 3. This won't be a problem for hard drives though. You could get two of them and throw them into a dual socket server board. Those have a wack ton of SATA ports but also cost more. Also one more thing make sure you get the E5 2670 V1 not the V2 or V3. A listing probably won't say V1 so if it is under 100 it is most likely a V1.
