Hello everyone,

So I am going to college this fall and would like to set up a NAS in my house that I can store my media collection on and stream it remotely while I am at college (meaning I would like it to have a nice web interface and android app). I plan on putting 4 x 4 TB drives in it set up in two sets of RAID 1 so it needs to have 4 drive slots (I will most likely start with 2x4TB in Raid 1 but I would like to allow for expansion in the future). I am looking for one of the prebuilt diskless NAS devices.  As I a very inexperienced in this area I am not comfortable building a NAS myself or setting one up myself with something such as Freenas. My question is what would be the best NAS i could buy based on factors such as: speed, how good the web interface is, how good the android app is, and price. I would like to stay under $500 for just the diskless NAS. So far I am looking at NAS devices such as the My Cloud EX4 (my worry with this is that I've heard that the wd NAS devices are quite buggy and don't have great support) and then Synology NAS devices such as the DS415+, DS416, DS415play, DS416j (my worry with this is that I am not sure if synology has a nice web interface or easy setup like western digital does). I apologize if any of this was confusing. If it was please ask me and I will try to explain it better. Which of these, or other devices, would you recommend? Also what NAS 4 TB drive would you recommend? (I have been looking at the WD Red and Red Pro, would the Red Pro be worth it?) Any information on the topic to better inform me or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I've bought this one a few month ago, actually it's a pretty good NAS.

I think it would be better to buy 2 drives, way better for redundancy. Configuring the NAS is a real pushover.

For the drives, you could buy this one :  http://www.ncix.com/detail/western-digital-wd40efrx-4tb-red-90-89793.htm

You can also take the 2tb, it's cheaper and it's enough for personal stuff. Raid 1 is good (data mirroring). If one drive dies, you'll be able to keep your data and replace the failed HDD.

I think I've answered your question.

Since the user asked for 4 drives... you haven't...

Buy a 4bay synology 416 series with the plex optional :)

You have the android app, you can use plex or any other program from synology to stream video/audio to your dorm room.

the synology DS Video app is just updated. the new version looks great and works great.
