Running VM off external HDD

Hi, I am getting a laptop these few days. The purpose for this laptop is for school, I am studying Computer Science. With my savings and some from my parents. I can manage to get a ZenBook UX305UA(which is available in my region), it has an i7 with a 512GB SSD. However after being a windows guy for all my life I would love to try a mac. I can get a base model Macbook Pro. But the major flaw is that it only has a 128SSD. My question is whether is it okay to run a VM(windows and Linux) off an external USB 3 Hard drive? Or would it be better to go for the 256GB or get the Zenbook(I really want to try a mac though). Thanks!

You should be able to run a vm from ecternal storage, may not be as fast but should work just fine. You could dual boot on the zenbook

Yeah, but windows have been giving me a bad experience since I upgrade to Windows 10...I really want to give mac a go.

You could still use 7, if you dual boot you'll probably end up needing to reinstall windows anyways so you could install 7 along with OSX

I cant speak for your area, but around here macs are extremely overpriced for the specs.
