Recently we have been able to obtain pre-built laptops with say 6700K CPU in, which is fab. But my question is, let's take the 4940mx (mobile specific) CPU and consider 1 thing, max temperature tolerance.

I believe the 4940MX max temp is 100 °C (sorry I have no idea what the top of the line skylake mobile CPU is etc), and the 6700K is 64°C, a serious consideration for max laptop gaming use (in CPU heavy games) and of course overclocking potential!

I'm starting to think a mobile CPU and desktop GPU combination in a laptop may yield the best results, all things considered.

Any thoughts on this?

with the mobile gpu you will have better battery life but 64C that is too low. people usually run this at like 70 or more when OCed

It would always be plugged in and always using maximum everything to get as much FPS as possible, it's only for demanding gaming etc.

the desktop one. Do some research on the core temps people get using the i7-6700k. I am sure they are above 64. 64 is very less

Looks like the 6700K starts to throttle at 80 °C, I would want to overclock it and hence my concern as this is in a laptop which run hot and cannot have a 3rd party cooler etc.

The mobile CPU, according to my very bad theory can run to 100 °C before throttling (or is that shut down? I am sure it must be lower to throttle?), that could be a big difference.

So a very overclocked mobile CPU (due to the higher temp tolerance) vs a non overclocked desktop CPU is kinda what i'm trying to judge here.

Thermal shutdown usually occurs at 105°C. You do not want to have your CPU run at 100°C in a laptop though, as you are risking damage to surrounding components.

If you are looking at Clevos with desktop CPU's, then you can rest assured that these have excellent cooling.

I have a ROG Laptop running a slightly overclocked 4700HQ right now, the cooling is fantastic I am just seeing if the next laptop should have a desk top CPU or mobile CPU as I will try and push it to the max.

64°C is a case temperature which isn't even measured as it requires a sensor embedded into the center of the IHS. The 6700k core temperature target is by default 100°C although manufacturers can offset this to a lower value.

Might be those mobile chips are desktop rejects, i.e. the CPU got too hot at DT TDP so used as a lower powered mobile CPU instead with it's lower TDP and promoted as a lower power CPU rather than a CPU with thermal issues.

As for your 4700HQ try overclocking it to 4.7GHz and see how cool it isn't. Note also that SKL consume a fair bit less power clock for clock than their HSW counter parts.
