I'm currently using a i5 760 and wanting to get something better. Main uses gaming and general use.

What is going to be the better option: (Prices PCCG Australia)

1. Intel i5 3570k ($259) + MSI Z77 MPower ($189) $448

2. Intel i5 4670k ($269) + MSI z87 GD65 ($259)     $528

I'm currently leaning towards the 3570k because it's $80 less overall.

Z77 pros:

More usb ports (8 vs 6 rear i/o)

More aesthetically pleasing

Z78 pros:

More Sata 3 ports (8 vs 2, but I don't need more than 2)

I think it has better on board audio (though I'm considering getting a sound card/dax in the future)

What are going to be pro/cons of each setup?

EDIT: current system spec

i5 760

gigabyte p55 motherboard

gtx 680

128gb samasung 830

CM hyper 212 evo

corsair hx-650 psu

corsair 2x4gb 2000mhz 9-10-9-27 ram

will get a 3tb seagate hdd with cpu and motherboard upgrade.

Stick with the 3570K and use the money saved to get a better cooler.

Case = Bitfenix Prodigy, Motherboard = P8Z77 - I Deluxe, CPU = 3570k @ 4.2GHz, RAM = 2x 8GB G-Skill Ripjaws, GPU = Sapphire 7950 Boost Edition, Storage = 256GB Samsung 840 Pro.

Excellent, good luck with your build.  ^_^

The few things I ingnored due to teh purchase of ivy after one week of haswell lunch

To love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk pain. To try is to risk failure, but risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.

I would go with the 3570K so you could save the money on something like a SSD. I would recommend the Samsung 840 Evo as your SSD drive.

Updated my original post to include specs. Have a samsung 830. Wouldn't mind putting a 1tb 840 evo in it in the future, but that will be a long wait.

Since your build already is pretty good, I would go with the 4670K and the GD65. If you want a cheaper motherboard, the Asus Z87-A is a good choice.

Will the 4670k be better at overclocking than the 3570k?

Since I'm only using a hyper 212 evo, it can't dissipate alot of heat. From what I've heard the 4670k runs hotter.

Would look at a 4.0-4.5 OC later on.

no the 4670k is generally a worse overcloaker. but with haswell the range in cpu is bigger than it was in ivy. it s rly a lottery now. your cpu could max out at 3.8ghz or 4.8ghz depending on the chip but it s all based on chance.

Anything I write is just a comment, take is as such, there is no guarantees associated with anything I say.

ATX Portable rig (smaller than prodigy(LOL)) :  Nmedia 2800 | Gigabyte Z77x-ud3h  | Corsair HX1000 | Scythe Big Shuriken | i5 3570K  |  XFX R9 290 DoubleD | Corsair Vengeance 32GB

They are about the same but Haswell will run a little bit hotter due to its integrated VRM. The overclockability of a Haswell chip depends on what chip you will get. Some are great while others are poor in overclocking:http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/06/01/intel_haswell_i74770k_ipc_overclocking_review/6

You should be able to hit 4.0Ghz on a 4670K imo.

70% of CPUs can clock to 4.5GHz

30% of CPUs can clock to 4.6GHz
20% of CPUs can clock to 4.7GHz
10% of CPUs can to 4.8GHz
Overall you will find most CPUs capable of reaching 44x to 45x with varying levels of voltage.
