First time boot, shut off seconds later

I finally gathered all the parts for my build and managed to get everything put together, but upon first time boot, I encountered an issue.

I pushed the power button on the case and the system came alive, but died seconds later. Just as I was about to check connections, it came alive on its own again, and died again seconds later, but then again, all on its own, it came back to life and managed to reach the post screen without any further issues, and I was able to navigate through the BIOS. Quite a way to boot up for the first time eh? Took a few tries.

As I proceeded to exit the BIOS and boot into my optical drive to install Windows, the system was still working just fine, but as I was "unpacking windows files", the system suddenly lost power, and this time it did not revive itself. When I pressed the power button again, nothing happened, and then I pressed the "start" button on my motherboard to bypass any potential problems with the case power button, but still nothing happened.

At this point I highly suspect its a defective power supply. The system posted and worked, so all the motherboard components are functional, and the most straightforward explanation for losing power is, well, the power supply.

Here are my system specs:

Intel i5-4670K

Corsair H80i

Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB DDR3

EVGA GTX 670 FTW

ASUS Maximus VI Impact

Samsung 830 Series 128GB SSD

Silverstone ST55F-G 550W PSU

Fractal Design Node 304 White

Could this also have something to do with the motherboard?

If you don't have an OS, it is your ASUS board double-booting. It is normal. Put on an OS and your problem will go away.

Ah that makes sense. But what could have caused the system to suddenly shut off? And now I can't even get the fans turning when I push the power button. The motherboard has power, I can tell by the lit "start" button and the lit flashback button on the rear I/O. It just seems like the motherboard turned itself off and now refuses to power on.
