so i am new to overclocking and my plan is to only overclock a little bit. the cpu i am going to be using is the 6600k http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80662i56600k

the cooler i will be using is http://pcpartpicker.com/part/thermaltake-cpu-cooler-clp0556b

i am not well versed in what is exactly required for a decent overclock. and no i dont want to switch the cpu to something AMD. i like intel for many reasons.

With that cooler you won't be able to overclock. It will probably run hot with no overclocking on a 6600k.

wanna suggest a decently cheap overclocking cooler. water or otherwise. i plan to eventually upgrade to water cooling anyways

Well first you need a good cooler. The CPU cooler you listed is just as bad as intel's stock coolers. A decent motherboard with good power delivery would also be nice, but most "gaming" motherboards meet the requirements and it's not that big of a deal unless you are going for a big overclock. Some decent thermal paste would help as well. The Hyper 212 evo is a great cheap OC cooler. Before overclocking just make sure you know what numbers to punch in.

or I run a http://pcpartpicker.com/part/noctua-cpu-cooler-nhu14s.

The H170 boards can't not overclock. You need the Z170 chipset.

Those coolers are quite expensive compared to the cooler he originally chose.

yea :/ i mean i dont want to spend a ton on an air cooler when i plan to get a liquid cooling system as soon as i have the money. this air thing is just to hold me over for a bit.

how does this motherboard sound?

that motherboard should do fine.

depending on how fast you can get money just spend 10-30. You can even wait to overclock till you water cool or go for a small overclock. That being said I have seen people get crazy overclocks on the Hyper 212 and such, but that kinda depends on luck.

ok, IMO. choice 1 :If you are getting watercooling as soon as possible and you don't want to postpone the build, then get the cheep as air cooler and don't overclock until you get the new cooler. Keep in mind the lifespan of most aio watercooling  options is 2 years.

Choice 2 get a good air cooling solution from the getgo, Overclock and never have to worry about leaks or pump failure.

Yes that's a Z170

i know its a z170 :P i just figured id ask your guys opinion on the board. honestly im not looking for like 150% i just wanna bump the thing from like 3.3 to lets say 3.6 or maybe a tiny bit above that.

Then you dont need water cooling. If you want to overclock and to maintain low temps just get a more expensive more capable cooler and save some money instead of buying an air cooler and then a water cooler.

i mean im not gunna go too high till i get water cooling. the ending plan is to end somewhere above 4.0 somewhere in the 4.2 range.

6600k runs  a boost clock of 3.9 out of the box. With my $60 U14s, I run 4.5GHz.
If you're only looking to OC a little, you don't need watercooling.

i forgot the 6600k has a different limit than the other one i was looking at. so yea maybe ill start at like 4.0

I don't think any cheep air cooler will yield safe temperatures with an overclock.

Is there a reason you're set on watercooling, and will it be an AIO or custom loop cooling your GPU as well?

Air cooling, it's a bit warmer. But, it's quieter and more reliable.

it would be something like the kraken. so an AIO. and mainly i am after the cooler temperatures.
