Can you use toothpaste as thermal paste? [Do not try at home]

You can, the result would be better than without any paste (and it will smell well =D) but it won't work very well.

It works as a temp fix (for 1-2 days) but it's not a good long-term solution

You can try it and it is often cited as one of the solutions tried in tests however toothpaste tends to dry out very quickly and is NOT reccomended as a serious solution.

TIM is much of a muchness and any named TIM is as good as any other (within a degree or two). 

I believe one of the Artic silvers is usually quoted as "the best" but it is only "better" by fractions of a degree.

Most aftermarket pastes are not to bad ... I like Arctic MX-4, for not to demanding cooling (LEDs or simple cooling if you want a non conductive paste) fluid metal on delid's but I have laying some IC Diamond laying arround, too (maybe better than MX-4)
