is there anyway to unlock a phone myself instead of paying ridiculous amounts of money to someone else?

Depends on phone make and model,  if there's locked bootloader, if in the US, carrier.

Once you figure all of that out, go to XDA as Curufinwe_wins and see if there's an unlock method for the phone. If the phone comes from a US carrier and you're out of contract on the phone, the carrier is supposed to provide you with an unlocking method.
