Ok so I need desperate help trying to revive a PC that was built over a decade ago. I inherited this PC, and have no idea what to salve and what to change. I have a $250 budget for replacement parts, and I am uncertain about what parts still work as the PC doesn't even start up.

About 2 years ago my brother attempted to fix it but gave up after the PC  crapped out on is after just 1 week.

Here is a list of all the parts, (some ancient) that I have to work with.

1x ASUS M2N-SLI DELUXE Motherboard

1x unknown CPU (possibly stock with motherboard)

1x Sapphire hd 7750 1gb gddr5 gpu

1x AMD CPU cooler (serial code FOXCONN 2z099-???? Built 2006)

1x WD2500JS 250GB 7200rpm hard drive built 2005

1x Optical DVD Drive with I think cd disc rewriter?

1x ISO Switching power supply Max 420W psu (possibly 2005 also)

1x 80mm rear mounted fan

1x reasonably sized tower case

Now the entire thing has been disassembled to the best of my ability apart from the screws as it's filled with dust and needs a good clean 1st.

So my plan was to update the PC with these parts but 1st I want to know if any of the current parts are salvageable?

Planned upgrades:

1x Intel Core i3-4170 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor

1xASRock H97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

1x Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

1xCorsair Builder 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

1xCooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

I want to know if I can save money reusing the existing parts or if you guys can recommend any better suggestions. My goal is to hit 1080p resolution between 30-60fps, but I know thats probably unrealistic atm.

Any help or insight into what I have and what I should do would be much appreciated.1460312657135-2123787800.jpg14603133440682051814718.jpg1460313451493-1434752339.jpg1460313491419-1645629301.jpg

You'll need memory, and your motherboard is DDR2 and haswell uses DDR3. If you can stretch to $270, you can do this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($174.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H81M-H Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($39.98 @ Amazon)
Memory: Team Vulcan 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($27.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $272.85
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

which I strongly recommend. Hopefully that HDD is still good, because the i5 is a big difference over the i3, and definitely something I would shoot for, especially if you want this to last. If you must get an SSD and stay closer $250, this is what I'd do:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-4170 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($119.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H81M-H Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($39.98 @ Amazon)
Memory: Team Vulcan 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($27.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: A-Data Premier SP550 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($38.88 @ OutletPC)
Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $256.72

You won't need an aftermarket CPU cooler with a locked CPU.

cpu: the i3

cpu cooler: drop the 212 evo, use stock

motherboard: the asrock to match the i3

Ram: missing, get 8 gb if possible, if not 4gb will do `-`

storage: drop the ssd, its not worth the money, better off spending it somewhere else, and use the old HDD in the old PC

GPU: 7750... hmm...

case: re-use, no problem

PSU: good lord no...

things to upgrade: with $250

CPU, Mobo, RAM, GPU(?), and PSU

Ok so good and bad news.

Bad news is I've identified the CPU to be a decade old AMD Sempron 3400+ 1800MHz cpu manufactured in 2006.

1460322865580-599823519.jpg

The good news is I just snagged a used core i3 (CPU only, no cooler) off eBay for only £60, or about 40% off its price if bought new, meaning I got a bit more money to play with.

Having read the replies I guess I'll have to buy a new mobo, however I can probably get a used Asus H-97 Pro gamer 1150 Mobo with the money I saved off buying a used CPU, but I still need to buy an aftermarket CPU Cooler now as I believe the 2006 AMD FOXCONN I have came stock with the 2006 AMD SEMPRON CPU.

1460323019514-1807060790.jpg

On the positive side, I can probably buy a used CPU Cooler off eBay for half the price of its RRP on Parts Picker.

I'll let you know when I've made my next purchase, however I'd still really appreciate any suggestions for the MOBO, COOLER, Power supply, as I've yet to decide with my wallet.

And as for RAM, I found a Kingston RAM that my bro stuck in, but he doesn't remember if it's DDR2 or DDR3, idiot.

Can anyone identify it for me?

Do the fans spin and lights come on inside the case?

If not  = PSU problem

They did for a period of time, but not anymore. I removed the decade old thermal paste which had now set like concrete so Im suspicious the CPU may have been overheating and that was what triggered it to fail the 1st time, buy I'm also dubious about the PSU too now.

I'm kind of stuck with buying one now, as I got a really cheap i3 off eBay, and don't have any confidence in the decade old cooler I currently have.

I'm really appreciative of the recommendations tough, I'm trawling through eBay trying to find some of the parts you recommended, after all, people are constantly updating their PC's and throwing away their old parts, and money saved is money for upgrades later on.

with that video card, it depends on the game

I'm probably only going to play F2P atm, or browser games until I get an actual job or get paid next, so I'm not totally bummed out about the card. That and I own a copy of Rome Total War, which I practically played the shit out of on my laptop. I'm at least hoping I can play DAY Z, even if it lags like a bitch.

That might be the plan next month, as I play on a 42" Panasonic Plasma, and that displays at 1080p and 60hz, so that's all I want to aim for. I'm dubious as to whether the ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe can actually run two cards however, as this might give me options on a second build.

At the very least, I plan on reusing the components just so my lil bro has something to mess around with and get started with PC building.

Ok so after researching and attempting an earlier build of salvaging a 10 year old PC with a £200/$300 budget, I've decided to refocus my attention and build a 'new pc' using the 2nd hand parts I intend to buy to replace the out of date components.

Having scoured the internet and eBay in search of compatible components, I believe I may have just achieved the impossible.

I have sourced used components from various sellers on eBay with whom I am negotiatin prices with. This is the build so far:

1x core i3 4170 (Paid £60, RRP £99)

1x Gigabyte ASUS  Z97-D3H LGA 1150 (Negotiating £40, RRP £58.98)

1x Zalman Z11 PC case (current bid £15)

1x Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (current bid £15)

2x Patriot 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600Mhz PVI38G160C9K (current bid £10)

1x OCZ ZS Series 650w Power Supply

(current bid £10)

1x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 gpu

(Current bid £45)

So far I have managed to negotiate most of these prices, and have a spare 2.5" seagate 500GB HDD lying around somewhere from my PS4.

My question is, does anyone have any concerns with the compatibility of these parts, my main concern being the RAM, as the packaging lists it as being for intel 6, 7, 8 series platforms, but my cpu is a 5th Gen 4170 I believe?

Any feedback would be much appreciated. I will update when I have confirmed the prices and made the purchases to give a total build cost.
